Reliable Rental for Frozen Retail Ruler, Iceland

Iceland Foods was founded in 1970 and has since built up a market-leading reputation in the frozen food industry. The company turns over more than £3 billion per annum, employs 23,000 people and provides quality, innovative food at affordable prices.

Operating more than 900 stores throughout the UK with a further 40 owned and franchised sites across Europe, the company is a truly global retailer and requires a business mobility provider that can support its major logistics operations.

James Roberts, Car Fleet Manager at Iceland, said:

“Fleet management and partnering with a rental provider has played a significant part in streamlining how we operate across the UK.”

Due to the unpredictable nature of the retail industry, Iceland has often faced challenges around the transport of people and goods between sites at short notice. For example, if one particular site was understocked, it required access to the right type of vehicles quickly to shift assets. Due to the size of the business, it didn’t make sense to pay for these vehicles all year round, especially as many cars and vans used by staff are not driven on a daily basis. Fleet managers at Iceland were also spending a lot of time on paperwork and administration duties, including processing parking charges and damage invoices, which was impacting on business efficiency.

Partnering with Nexus and taking advantage of its unique rental booking and management platform, IRIS, has greatly improved Iceland’s operational effectiveness. IRIS has provided a more streamlined approach to fleet management and reduced administration time, enabling resource to be reallocated within the business, improving profitability.

James continued: “Nexus has reduced our administrative burden and has dramatically reduced our damage costs and parking charges. It also provides a quick turnaround with friendly, knowledgeable staff who help reduce costs rather than upsell.

“Flexibility is important to us and Nexus enables us to flex our fleet in line with demand with all vehicles manageable through its IRIS software. This saves vital time and delivers additional cost savings, providing a smooth logistics and delivery service.”

Combining cost savings and market-leading consultancy, Nexus benefits Iceland in a number of ways:

  1. Cost-effective daily rental compared to other suppliers
  2. Enabling Iceland to flex its fleet at short notice
  3. Time and cost savings
  4. Rejected over 20% of damage claims in 2019

These solutions have reduced administration time, freeing up resources and cutting fleet costs by helping to reduce the number of damage claims and parking fines that require sign-off off by Iceland’s own fleet management team.

Nexus is able to source specialist vehicles, such as refrigerated lorries, at short notice should Iceland need them to transport edible goods between sites to keep up with seasonal peaks in demand, driven by unpredictable English weather.

After being named the UK’s top supermarket for customer satisfaction by the Institute of Customer Service in 2019, Iceland knows the importance of maintaining positive relationships with clients and promoting an outstanding customer experience.

Likewise, retaining 98% of customers each year and maintaining a customer satisfaction rate three times better than the industry average when measured against service issues, Nexus prides itself on delivering outstanding customer service through its people, technology and service partners. While Iceland has the ability to self-serve through IRIS, it also benefits from having a dedicated Account Manager at Nexus to handle any queries and provide dedicated support when required.

Iceland has now had a long-running partnership with Nexus since choosing the company to supply rental provision due to its unrivalled supply chain and nationwide coverage.

This along with Nexus’ competitive price-point compared to a sole supply through a traditional rental provider is what has kept Iceland working with Nexus as its preferred business mobility partner since May 2012.
