A Year in the Spotlight
As the world enters a new decade and we enter our 20th year of trading, we wanted to reflect on our highlights and achievements of 2019. We hit the headlines in January, kick-starting the year with the announcement of record results, up 43.5% compared to the previous year, while securing a double-digit profit rise for the fifth consecutive year. The investment of Phoenix Equity Partners in 2018 has provided the management team at Nexus with the platform to spearhead further growth and due to continuous investment in our people and innovative technology, the business looks set to continue our impressive growth trajectory in 2020.
As the weather worsened, we shared our top tips on safe driving in wintery conditions and built upon the expertise and experience held within our team and launched the latest in our Glovebox Guide series. Amidst rising vehicle repair costs and spikes in damage claims during extreme weather, this handy guide equipped drivers with the knowledge needed for safe travelling in challenging conditions.
February also saw the launch of Nexus’ charity partnership as a staff consultation led to the stillbirth and neonatal death charity, Sands, being selected as Nexus’ charity for 2019. We set an ambitious £12,000 target to raise throughout the year through various events including skydives, raffles and a directors’ jailbreak, which would support the vital work Sands does to support parents affected by the loss of a baby.
Having a charity partner is part of Nexus’ drive to ‘give something back’ to the community. As a Yorkshire-based business we recognise the need to support local organisations that work so hard to change people’s lives for the better. Having business purpose is important to everyone at Nexus, from the board of directors to our apprentices, and we’re proud to provide all staff with the opportunity to choose their own charity partner each year.
As we approached spring, Nexus’ commitment to customer service was recognised by Fleet News magazine as part our inclusion on the fleet industry’s flagship annual awards shortlist. Our Fleet News Award nomination highlighted Nexus’ industry leading customer satisfaction rates and our commitment to continuous development through innovation – something that helps us stand out within our sector.
On the back of this, our new Chairman, Jim Faulds, joined in March bringing a wealth of B2B experience with him to support the business in its next phase of growth. We also added to our awards tally by claiming the Judges’ Leadership category at the coveted Northern Tech Awards in Manchester. These awards celebrated the fastest growing and most promising tech companies in the North while commending the successful entrepreneurial paths of business leaders. It was a huge achievement for Nexus to be recognised as a tech leader and rewarded the investment the business has put in to enhance our technological credentials.
Our CEO David Brennan followed this by sharing his insight to predict the next decade of fleet management for one of the country’s largest business news outlets. David was also profiled by BusinessCar magazine as part of an exclusive interview that detailed the evolution of the mobility landscape and how Nexus had fought its way to the top of the pile by designing and implementing innovative technology to support customers and the wider industry.
David was also in line for further awards recognition through EY’s Entrepreneur of the Year programme in a nod to Nexus’ continued growth and disruptive innovation. David won the Disruptor category in the North and went on to compete nationally with some of the UK’s leading and emerging entrepreneurs.
The business went from strength to strength, announcing a major new client win in May; Inchcape Fleet Solutions. During the summer months, Nexus was also confirmed as a supplier to the Crown Commercial Services (CSS) network, which recommends trusted companies that can meet the needs of the public sector. This was a major coup for the business and will play an important role in further expanding Nexus’ portfolio of public sector clients that require a time critical and cost-effective mobility procurement solution.
Nexus announced a major new partnership with the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) to supply cars and vans to the UK’s largest and most recognised coastal rescue charity to help it transport volunteers to vital operations while supporting its fundraising mission. This was the latest high-profile contract win for Nexus, cementing our reputation as a preferred supplier to public organisations due to the cost efficiencies and scalability provided to customers.
Last year, we also revealed we were was selling our sister operation, Adapted Vehicle Hire (AVH), to Newship as part of a strategic move that enabled the business to focus on expanding our B2B rental market share further. The move, which also saw Nexus part with specialist vehicle assets, signified our focus on using technology to best-serve customers while keeping costs lean, similar to how some of the most successful and fastest-growing mobility businesses operate.
Nexus was also recognised as part of one of the most prestigious business awards programmes in the country as we were listed as part of The Sunday Times’s Top Track Ones to Watch for 2019. This acknowledged companies that have shown significant growth over the last year and are deserving of appreciation for their innovative approach. The list was published in The Sunday Times and cemented the business’ reputation for successfully scaling.
The team continued to share their expertise towards the end of 2019 which saw Nexus launch its latest Glovebox Guide, which advised drivers how to navigate London’s new Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) without falling foul of a fine. As new legislation continues to dictate the type of vehicle that can access urban areas, Nexus created this informative guide to help drive down fleet costs.
The year was rounded off in style as our team celebrated smashing the £12,000 fundraising target for Sands with a Christmas jumper day. The milestone was the icing on the cake in a year of industry-accolades and business growth and reminded the team of the incredible hard work they continue to put in each and every day to make this business a success.
